I was born and raised in the small town of Cordova, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. I grew up in a farming family, and spent a good deal of my youth looking around the farm for lizards, snakes, turtles, and frogs. My grandparents supported my love of nature and the outdoors, and I spent my weekends watching nature documentaries on Maryland Public Television. It was then that my interest in tropical ecology and herpetology began. I am the first member of my family to graduate college, earning my Bachelor's in Environmental Studies from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, and a Master's in Environmental Sciences from the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras.
